PACIFIC JAZZ 12” LP – NEW PJ SERIES
PART ONE - PJ-1 / PJ-20

The new Pacific Jazz series returned to the
PJ prefix numbering the releases that had been used when the company was
launched in 1952, sans the LP designation. The original logo that had occupied two lines on the record
label was modified so that it occupied a single line as seen in the examples
below. The distinctive dime store
font that Roy Harte used for the original logo was retained.
The new PJ releases included sessions that
had been released previously in the PJLP, 1200 and PJM series. Art Blakey’s RITUAL session was
released for third time as PJ-15 with a new jacket, but the pressings were
leftover from the 1200 series release as WP-1275 with the World Pacific logo.
The initial design for the new PJ label
included a narrow band through the center of the label with the side and matrix
information on one side with the World Pacific logo (quite small) occupying the
other side.
