THE 400 45 SINGLE SERIES
X-401 / 429 (77800)

© James A. Harrod, COPYRIGHT PROTECTED; ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

The 400 45 RPM single series resembles the 800 45 RPM single series in that around thirty singles total were released in the series.  After dropping the “X” prefix in the 300 45 RPM single series leading up to this numerical sequence it is adopted again and appears on several releases before it is dropped again and replaced with an “A” or “B” prefix to distinguish the sides of the single.  The 400 designation is in the wax, a simple matrix number, but a few releases have a longer matrix number as well, X-414 and 417 A/B. The first single listed below, 400 A/B, was released using the Aura imprint and several releases preceding it in the 300 series likewise bore the Aura imprint, 393 and 395.

The next numerical release following 429 A/B transitions to a new numerical series, 77000.  The first number in that series is included here, 77800, as it illustrates the change to assigning a release number to the 45 single that is different from the matrix number.  The matrix numbers for 77800 are WP-429-B and WP-430.  The next release in this new numerical series, 77801 would carry matrix numbers WP-431 and WP-432.

Artists featured on this group of releases include: Teddy Reynolds & Lala Wilson,The Crusaders, Jessie Paul, Les McCann, The Sandells, Les McCann and the Jazz Crusaders, Long Gone Miles with Willie Chambers and Leroy Vinnegar, Bud Shank and the Folkswingers, The Jazz Crusaders, The Stoneman Family,  Charles Kynard, Buddy Collette, Ann Callison, David Parker, The Sandels, The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, The Kentucky Colonels and Monty Alexander.
