This post concludes our examination of the 1200 series that began with PJ-1201 and ended with WP-1299. Many releases in this series strayed from the “jazz” concept that had been the foundation of the label when Harte and Bock named their new company Pacific Jazz. The name change to World Pacific enabled these deviations from the core business and releases of spoken word, comedy, Indian sitar, Japanese koto, Spanish flamenco, folk music and poetry & jazz appeared in the 1200 series.
The PJ prefix returned to a new release series beginning in 1960. These releases would commence with PJ-1 and would be dedicated to jazz artists. The Pacific Jazz name would be prominent on the labels.
Bock created two new release series to accommodate releases in these other genres. Both would use the WP prefix and be marketed as World Pacific releases. The 1400 series would be used mainly for releases of classical Indian music although comedy, Latin and spoken word albums would be issued among the initial releases in this series.
The 1800 series was a mixed bag from the start with Latin, comedy, folk, “popular” jazz, surf rock, bluegrass and other forays in hopeful bestseller releases. Both of these series will be presented in tandem as our examination of labels moves forward into the 1960s.
