Pacific Jazz
launched a line of jazz anthology LPs in 1955 to complement the release of
William Claxton’s portfolio of photographs entitled JAZZ WEST COAST. The logo for the LP series used the
same title artwork that Stuart Fox had designed for the portfolio, plus his
solarized portrait of Don Fagerquist that was used intermittently on labels and
LP covers.
The series also
featured the only 45 EP box set issued by Pacific Jazz, a three EP set offering
the same music available on the first LP in the series, JWC-500. A total of fifteen LPs would be issued
in the series that ended with JWC-514.
Several of the
albums in the series were issued in the Stereo-1000 series as well, Stereo-510
as Stereo-1009, Stereo-511 as Stereo-1031, Stereo-512 as Stereo-1029, Stereo-513
as Stereo-1021 and JWC-514 as Stereo-1015. Although the jacket for this last item, JWC-514, bore that
number, the labels were identical to the WP-1257 release and our research has
not yielded a label bearing JWC-514.
Pacific Jazz issued
a special Jazz West Coast catalogue flyer in the summer of 1957 devoted to the
series. The interior pages listed
the first seven releases in the series.
